Welcome to the internet home of the Triangle Troglodytes of the National Speleological Society. We are a grotto, or local chapter, of the NSS. The Triangle of North Carolina is the greater metropolitan area of Raleigh, Durham, & Chapel Hill, and we are the grotto for the eastern half of the state. Troglodytes are cave dwelling people, which most of us can only aspire to be. For short, we call our organization and members “TriTrogs”. The other grottos in North Carolina are the Charlotte Caving Club and Flittermouse Grotto out of Asheville.
If you are interested in exploring caves, or are just curious about the science, come to a meeting or join us virtually! We meet at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh on the fourth Tuesday of every month except December. If you can’t get there, you can connect via Zoom. Sign up for our email list to get meeting announcements, along with the link to join remotely. See this page for more complete information.
Our people are organizing trips on a regular basis. Sometimes we go into caves just to take photographs, sometimes to create a map, sometimes for a physical or technical challenge, and sometimes just to take rock-bottom beginners to their first wild cave. We typically travel a few hours to the mountains to reach the caves we’re exploring. To learn more, read some of our recent trip reports, connect with our Facebook group, or just email us!
Don’t see anything planned that works for you? Speak up! We would love to help you get something organized.
